Story[]

In 1982, a man named Nick and his partner, Eddie, mugged a tourist with his wife and son in an alley near the Monarch Theatre. When the man turned a corner Nick struck his neck with the butt of his revolver, knocking him unconscious. Eddie ran toward him and swiped the wallet from his back pocket while Nick threatened the woman and child, pointing the revolver in their faces. As they fled the woman let out bloodcurdling screams that echoed through the streets. The screams were heard by a man on top of a building in the alleyway, a man dressed as a bat.

Later, Nick and Eddie began to split the cash they stole. Eddie chastised his partner for pointing a gun at that child. Nick and Eddie then encountered the man dressed as a bat. Nick shot the man dressed as a bat twice in the torso, knocking him to the ground. Believing him to be critically wounded, they began to leave, only to see man dressed as a bat had already recovered, striking the winged silhouette pose yet again. The man dressed as a bat kicked Eddie through a wooden door and down the stairs. Nick tried to escape but the man dressed as a bat grabbed Nick and pulled him over the edge of the roof. The man dressed as a bat ordered Nick to turn himself in and to tell others that he is Batman. Batman tossed Nick to the ground on the roof and leaped down below the building. Nick went to inspect the scene only to find Batman was already gone, he didn't hit the pavement. Frightened out of his mind, Nick lingered at the crime scene with the critically injured Eddie. When he was finally arrested he told the GCPD that he had seen a giant bat, and was overheard by reporter Vicki Vale who then tried to get more information from Lieutenant James Gordon.

Vicki was in Gotham to investigate rumors of the mysterious Batman for the Daily Planet. Gordon refused to believe Batman was real and Gordon even thought Superman wasn't real, that he was just a fictional character Lois Lane created to sell newspapers. Gordon did confirm to Vicki that the mysterious Red Hood, a criminal mastermind that has been active since the 1970s, was real and urged Vicki to look into that.

Meanwhile, mobster Jack Napier was having an affair with Alicia Hunt, a well known figure in high fashion culture, having appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine, and various modelling pictures adorned her lavish apartment. Alicia was also the mistress of Carl Grissom, the boss of Napier. While Alicia had no guilt for being an ally to murderous gangsters, did have a tender side. Alicia truly loved Jack and warned him to never let Grissom learn of their infidelity, because then he would have Jack assassinated out of jealousy. She was amazed by the fact that Jack never worried about this. Jack then told Alicia of his plans to kill Grissom and take over the organization, because Jack thought Grissom controlling crime in a red hood would get that much publicity for their operations. Jack had no taste for theatrics while Grissom did.

Unknown to Jack and Alicia, they were being watched by a camera in Alicia's mirror by a man wearing a grey suit, blue tie, red hood, and red cape, in an underground lair. The Red Hood removed his mask and revealed himself to be Carl Grissom, an elderly man in his 60s. Grissom swallowed in anger and turned off the television, admitting to Detective Eckhardt, whom he was sharing drinks with, that watching too much television is bad for you. Eckhardt was the man who told Grissom about Napier and Alicia which made Grissom want revenge on Napier. Grissom admitted to Eckhardt that with Napier's luck, operations are a piece of cake, but Grissom chuckled as he announced that Napier's luck was about to change.

Billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne arrived in a party of the Gotham Council. He started to walk inside to the party, he ran into reporter Vicki Vale. The two developed an interest in each other with Bruce hid his nature. Bruce flirted with Vicki and tried to see drafts of her work and she refused to share them with him. When Bruce returned to the party after his conversation with Vale, he ran into Jack Napier at the party.

Meanwhile, Harvey Dent returns from Metropolis. He declares that he will put all his force in orer to push away Grissom and end his control on Gotham. Bruce later meets Harvey Dent at his Office at the council building, and seems to be impressed. As Bruce leaves, he is attacked by the Red Hood gang.
