I, Bruce Wayne is a 2019 American Psychological Crime Drama film written and directed by Cary Fukunaga. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Jacob Tremblay as Bruce Wayne and retells the origin story that would lead to the character becoming Batman.
Set in 1976 over the course of a month, it follows the aftermath of the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne and it’s impact the city and people of Gotham. Jake Gyllenhaal, David Oyelowo, Jennifer Garner, Bill Skarsgård and John Carroll Lynch appear in supporting roles. I, Bruce Wayne was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort, in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros.
I, Bruce Wayne is the first live-action theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of American, due to its violent and disturbing content.
I, Bruce Wayne premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, where it won the Golden Lion, and was released in the United States on December 3, 2019. The film was well received by critics; with the cast’s performances (particularly Tremblay), the direction, writing, mature tone, musical score, cinematography and production values being highly praised, although criticism was levelled at the long runtime and the drawn out nature of some of the violent scenes.
The film became a major box office success, setting records for an December release. I, Bruce Wayne has grossed over $1 billion, making it the first R-rated film to do so, the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2019, and the 31st-highest grossing film of all time.
I, Bruce Wayne received numerous accolades. At the 92nd Academy Awards, the film earned a leading 12 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, winning Best Actor for Tremblay and Best Original Score for Segun Akinola. Tremblay and Akinola also won at the Golden Globe and BAFTA Award ceremonies.

The setting is Gotham City, 1976. The Film takes place over the course of a month, covering the fallout of the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

The 12 year old son of Thomas and Martha Wayne, and heir to the Wayne fortune. Arthur Darvill plays an adult Bruce during the film's opening and closing scenes.
- Captain James Gordon (Jake Gyllenhaal)
A new addition to the Gotham City Police Department, and one of the few clean cops on the force.
- Alfred Pennyworth (David Oyelowo)
The faithful butler of the Wayne family, and subsequent surrogate father for Bruce. Don Warrington plays an older Alfred who also narrates the film.
- Leslie Thompkins (Jennifer Garner)
A colleague and close friend of Thomas Wayne.
- Joe Chill (Bill Skarsgård)
A street criminal who mugs and kills Thomas and Martha Wayne.
- Lt. Harvey Bullock (John Carroll Lynch)
A veteran member of the G.C.P.D., who is partnered with Jim Gordon. Although not yet corrupt, Bullock's sense of morality has since become dulled.
