The Cowl is an American superhero-based television series created and produced by R.J. Brown. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, the series takes place in a futuristic Gotham City and follows the activities of Bruce Wayne, an aged billionaire who helps to create a team of vigilantes with the intention of carrying on his legacy as the Dark Knight.

Heavily inspired by numerous comic book publications and previous television shows featuring the character, The Cowl had its series premiere on September 27, 2015 on the IFC cable channel.

Conception of the show

In 2013, aspiring writer Roderick Brown came up with the idea for The Cowl after watching the first episode of Batman Beyond and thought of applying a futuristic lens to the Batman mythos while amalgamating different aspects of comic books, films, and shows featuring the character. Brown also envisioned a much darker side of the mythos, sparing no characteristic from being transferred to disturbing realism. The character of Bruce Wayne would be the frame of the series, and his persona would be heavily redone and frequently examined along with the different characters that appear.

Cast and characters

  • Ed Harris as Bruce Wayne/Batman: The original Caped Crusader, Bruce Wayne retired from his war on crime due to his increasing frailty. Following a massive spike in crime in the wake of the Batman's "disappearance", Gotham City quickly devolved into a state of decay much worse than before. Observing the city crumbling before him, Bruce decides to continue the legacy of Batman, but as the leader of a group of up-and-coming crimefighters.
    • Anson Mount as Bruce Wayne/Batman (age 40+)
  • Sam Neill as James Gordon:
  • Alfred Molina as Alfred Pennyworth: Bruce's esteemed butler, Alfred Pennyworth helped Bruce to forge the Batman identity and turn it into a legend. Shortly after Bruce retired, Alfred also found himself succumbing to frailty, which would soon be the catalyst of his demise. Molina's role as the character is only shown in flashbacks.
  • Dane DeHaan as Terry McGinnis/Batman II: A troubled but good-natured teen who spearhead's the Knight Force.
